The Anchorage Lincoln Dinner: Gov. Palin calls us out

If political parties are families, or at least some semblance of one, then Friday night at the Anchorage Lincoln dinner, we looked through the family album, laughed at some old photos, and found out some things about the GOP. It appears we’re rather dysfunctional, but we do know who’s in charge, and with that, order will come from chaos. And while who is in charge may surprise some, and start arguments from others, that person represents what our state face should be in Republican circles, and perhaps regain a certain level of respect for ourselves. One person gave a speech with clarity, purpose, and direction. Someone else, for lack of a better descriptor, chewed republicans out.

As I wrote last week, there are some items that Gov. Palin may have had trouble with, at least in theory, in addressing a room of Anchorage republicans, many of whom she’s been at odds with since the primary. When she took the stage after 3 taped messages from Michael Steele, Don Young, and Lisa Murkowski, respectively, she wasted little time in rehashing her run for VP, and the position it put her family in. As her address continued, she intermixed references to President Lincoln, and the struggles he endured prior to and during his presidency, and her own struggles with the “mainstream media” and how she has had to endure the financial and political hardships of ethics complaints and criticisms from within and without her own party. An opportunity to give a message of direction and purpose for the faithful, turned into a lot of “why is everyone against me?” Occasional references to this point would have been acceptable, but the size and passion in delivering this message was stunning.

To be sure, the governor has taken a sizable amount of criticism from conservatives, but it must be pointed out that until her VP nomination, the ADN and members of the Democrat party had little to complain about and indeed many helped shape much of her early legislation. However, Gov. Palin referenced those elected officials that may share her party but not her views on AGIA as being motivated by an agenda that in her mind runs contrary to the best interests of the state. I would point out, that if the Daily News and almost every elected Democrat make a statement fully endorsing AGIA, then it would almost be incumbent on some in the party to call for a review of the current economics and the liability the state faces in light of the dynamics of the market. She stated repeatedly that she encourages healthy debate within her administration, but didn’t cite a single instance where someone made an argument that changed her view. One could guess that the last one to do that is now running for Anchorage mayor.

The impression I got, was that intermixed with the references to Lincoln, there was an underlying hostility projected to many in the audience, a sort of “if you’re not with me you’re against me” attitude. She announced she was Pro Life, but never expressed a need for the state to address how she is to pick Supreme Court Justices. She spent the bulk of her speech talking about tearing down and critics, but nothing about the economic future of the state. She announced what the personal financial cost of her “open and transparent” has cost her to avoid being open and transparent. As a matter of fact, only one person spoke of issues greater than self with any conviction and clarity, and that person is the clear face of the Alaska Republican Party: Lisa Murkowski.

She spoke of the need to remake the party in the image of Reagan: lower taxes (a word the governor never uttered), smaller government, strong defense. Her brief but measured response brought applause more than once, with the strongest being the line “I serve with Sen. Begich for the good of all Alaskans, but I can tell you this, I miss Ted”, a line that was greeted with emotional applause for her kind regards for a man that served the state well. She never mentioned how she originally received her seat, or the level of criticism she and her father received, but has taken the role of Senior Senator and was every bit the stateswoman. Her address contrasted with the governor’s, gave all present 2 distinctly different views of the leadership and future of the Alaska GOP. One voice providing guidance and firm resolve, and the other giving a dissertation on the slights and criticisms that have been part and parcel of her tenure as governor. The lasting image I left with was the jarring contrast presented by 2 passionate members of the party, and the end knowing that only one can lead.

“Super” Dave Stieren enjoyed the menu, and was glad that the food was fully cooked, and was delighted with the cheesecake finish. He was surprised to be the winner of a silent auction item, as being a high bidder for anything isn’t something he’s accustomed to.

They are no families at all. Thai are enemy inside the parties. tractari auto tractoare de vanzare

That is sad thing.

I had a very hard time hearing the unneccesary applause as she was b**** slappin the party of Lincoln and at the same time speaking as if she was talking to the lower 48. BTW,  she was not in the present talking to Alaskans. I do have that audio, but sorta bad. Working on it. What do you think she meant when she was talking about being told to mock the mockers. Who's giving her advice? John Coale- he's enamored with Sarah. He calls her his girlfriend. Are we done yet with this kind of behavior coming from the 'executive of the state'?

Palin's speech at the dinner validates the Peter Principle, as Governor she has reached her level of incompetency.  (Judging how she ran Wasilla into the ground, arguably she was beyond her level of competency even as mayor.)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_principle

Her speech also confirms she will not have a place on the national scene.

Palin's speech displayed an extreme level of immaturity.  Rather than do what a skilled politician would do (hold one's tongue, speak in positive or neutral tones) Palin could not control her desire to blame, lash out and whine, for the umpteenth time.

So either Palin is a dunce socially/politically or (more likely) she is a narcissistic, megalomaniacal brat who thinks she can do or say anything she wants.  (To be sure, when mayor of Wasilla she indicated as much.  When questioned by the city council about spending $50,000 to redecorate the mayor's office she said something like "I am the mayor and I will do anything I want!")

In contrast, as noted in your spot on article, Murkowski conveys intellect and an ability to get things done for her constituency.  When Palin walks into a room or makes a speech the negative vibes in the room raise beyond to what the negative vibe meter can measure; Murkowski calms everyone down.

Thank you for sharing your observations. I am a long time admirer of Lisa Murkowski's determiniation and integrity - even when I disagree with her. Thank you so much for defining the difference between our governor and our senior senator. When Lisa runs for reelection, I just may have to vote Republican. Go, Lisa, Go.

Here's what the GOP should do in 2010.

Run Lisa for Governor.  Have her knock out Sarah.  End Sarah's political career.  She can do weather on Fox News.

Run Ted Stevens for Senator.  The crusty ol' felon.

Do it!

I like the way you think.

But you guys might actually be coming around.  If this article reads as the dinner went then you guys may be onto something.  I am glad to see mostly a consensus on how Palin really is and that Murkowski is working with the hand that she was dealt.

Although I disagree with how she (Murkowski) got into office and how she won re-election, I do agree with the things she has done since in that office.  I am glad that she tends to be more like her mom than her dad when it comes to sensibility.

That being the case, best of luck to you.

It sounds as if it was a wonderful evening.   Whine and cheese for everyone.

I'm starting to get nervous.  You guys are figuring it out.   Lisa Murkowski is a solid force to be reckoned with in the Senate.  She appeals to moderates, independants, and even some liberals as well as conservatives.

I would love to see a Palin-Murkowski battle for any office.   The debates would be priceless.

My first ever local GOP event and well, the Governors Speech was ..schizophrenic.  If she had kept it to the first 15-20 minutes, she would have had the perfect "Welcome to 2010" launch.  She was just dead on in terms of the party welcoming the Independents and Dems who feel they have no place in Obama/Pelosi's European Social Democratic party (I'm one of them).  That part of the speech needs to go to every party leader in the country.  The rest of it though, WTH WAS that?  After talking about the need to heal, she goes off on a 30 minute whinefest about how everyone including people in that room had been picking on her and her family, how she was out hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees for ethics complaints etc.  I'm not a fan of hers, but even beyond that, it was just inappropriate and pointless.  Her first 15 minutes showed me what she could be and what others love about her.  The last 30 show that she really needs to hire some professonals, who can teach her how to let surrogates do the nasty stuff, and when to let the petty personal crap go.  BTW ditto on Lisa.  She impresses me more and more every day.  Yet another situation where Frank Murkowski had a political tin ear but did the right thing.

More than anything else, Sarah Palin sees herself as a huge victim.  Nothing bad in her life is her fault.  She's a victim.  Boo hoo hoo for poor poor Sarah.

...with the political stance of ANY of "today's Republicans" -- they sure aren't the ones I knew growing up ('50s and '60s) --  but I have to admit, what I've seen of Lisa Murkowski and a substantial number of the Alaska legislators in these past 6 months since the RNC/DNC, they could and perhaps should be leading Alaska -- if only the sitting governor would get out of the way.

However, I do NOT understand how anyone could support Sarah Palin in any political post, if her means of "getting out of the way" is to move on and out of Alaska to campaign for some higher political goal.   She's collecting divisive, negatory political baggage faster than she did shopping for that 30 pieces of luggage during the campaign.

Dave Stieren's observations make Lisa Murkowski's competence and Sarah Palin's INcompetence even more clear to me, but I'd bet even now he's just landed on the pro-Palin blogs' "bad list" for telling it like it is instead of what they want to hear.

I have been an observer of Alaska politics for a long time.  I have never seen a governor so focused on things that don't matter in so far as moving Alaska's economy ahead.

Her tax and spending policies to date have not been effective in getting us any closer to any large scale project....The gas line, Pebble Mine or drilling in ANWR.

LIsa Murkowski on the other hand seems to be focused on things that are of actual benefit to Alaska and its people.  If there were a choice of who should run the Republicians in Alaska, te choice seems clear.

Lisa Murkowski is the type of Republican that can mend our Party. Palin is the type that will continue to send the Party into a downward spiral.

The Governor didn't take the time to pass the ole' hat around.

This was an excellent article.  With Sarah Palin it is all about me, me, me.  Why are you picking on me?

There is a very good reason Sarah, you have abused your office, the Republican Party, your family, and all Alaskans.

Sarah Palin is incapable of change and for her to continue as governor into another term or to be elected to another office is simply wrong.

Good Article Dave. Fair and balanced. As I've said before, there's not a nickels worth of difference between either major party and the microcosm of their dysfunctionality can best be seen in our own Governors Office and our inept legislature. Keep your powder dry.
