Face Off

begich palin By Linda Kellen Biegel

The Democrats in Anchorage had their Legislative send-off Friday night at Café del Mundo in midtown. As a blogger who spent a lot of time with my fellow Democrats during the Convention in Denver as well as during the campaigns, it was nice to see a lot of folks that I hadn’t seen in awhile.

While I heard and participated in many conversations, the one that piqued my curiosity the most came from several legislators who preferred to remain anonymous. It seems that they had been unable to get a list from the Governor of the state infrastructure projects she was going to put forward as requested by President-elect Obama. She even refused to give the information to the legislators in person, saying they were “confidential,” yet she stated she was sharing them with Senator Begich’s Administration.

So why couldn’t she share them with her State Legislature?

You may remember that economic consultant Gregg Erickson’s Dec. 20th Op-Ed piece in the ADN first alluded to these items on the “infrastructure list”:

“Gov. Sarah Palin also caught the spoor of massive federal project handouts, but -- to the chagrin of road builders at the state Dept. of Transportation and Public Facilities -- she directed officials to focus all the state's efforts on getting a massive federal subsidy for the TransCanada gas pipeline.”

AndrewHalcro.com picked up this story through emails from his incredibly accurate network of sources:

“…unlike other states, the governor is limiting requests for federal economic stimulus funds, in our case to a few transportation projects which are directly related to the gasline.

I have heard also that DOT has been told not to submit a number of projects (including some that might be supported by legislators and their constituent communities) because they are non-gasline-related.”

The concerns here, according to Halcro’s post, are that Alaska would miss out on a valuable opportunity to gain much-needed infrastructure improvements (important, for Alaska’s Rural communities) plus Alaska would lose our share of some very important federal funding at the same time that our state revenue is on the decline (and, I would add, at the same time that the Alaska “brand” has been seriously damaged in Congress).

These concerns were very much reflected in the discussion with the anonymous legislators, who have been stymied at every turn by the Palin Administration in their quest to get information. I vowed to call the Begich office on Monday to find out more.

Clearly, Senator Begich is carrying his 24-7 policy into his D.C. Administration, as KTVA’s Matt Simons got this story from them Saturday:

“Wednesday, Palin sent Alaska's congressional delegation a three-page letter only requesting five stimulus package projects. The letter only added Kodiak Missile Launch Facility upgrades to the four gas pipeline road projects Palin already requested.

Begich says in an estimated $800 billion dollar economic recovery package he wants to know why Palin is only asking for about $150 million dollars.”

This is obviously not “confidential” as far as Senator Begich is concerned. This seems to be a clear statement that if Governor Palin wants to use the State of Alaska economy as her ticket to the 2012 Presidential candidacy, he’s not playing.

As a matter-of-fact, Begich and “the rest of the delegation” will even do her work for her—going so far as to compile requests from state mayors and community groups, which he plans to “sort out” with Senator Lisa Murkowski before presenting them to Palin.

In her letter, Palin claims that “it is not appropriate for the state to comment on those projects.”

So, is she refusing to comment on her refusal to include community projects desperately needed by the State of Alaska so that she can look like a “fiscal conservative” for 2012?

Our turn to get under that very-crowded bus is here, Alaska. Perhaps by not-so-subtly bringing Senator Murkowski into the discussion, Senator Begich is showing Governor Palin how it’s going to be with this new team in Washington. It gives me comfort to believe for now that Senators Begich and Murkowski will be watching over her actions on behalf of Alaska. It seems that someone has to.

Sarah Palin is only against those earmarks that won't get her elected in 2012.  carnival cruise.

Sarah is not aware of how much it really takes to recover from dreadful economic situation and that's why showing the pure immaturity she proposed for only $150 millions for the recovery package with which America won't be coming out of the problem but would be getting more into it. girl games

What??? You're suggesting that the State Governor might contemplate deliberately damaging the economic well being of the people she serves in order to further personal political ambition? This is the same Governor who announced to the nation that she loves Alaska "more than you will ever know"? She grew up in Alaska, all her family and friends live in Alaska, she advocates the uniqueness of Alaska to the world - and you're saying she might contemplate harming the well being of all those that she serves and loves? Maybe you could explain why you think she might do that?

...it says "use" instead of "damage" as I caught it in the edits yesterday.

I couldn't edit this one.

Linda,

Sorry it took me so long to change damage to use. My bad. I'll be quicker next time.

Dan

Let's see if Senator Murkowski has the same sentiment.

Begich is setting the ground for the blame game. It will go like this. Begich talked tough on ANWR. The Democrats will tell Begich, you want what?

Your premise is flawed and quite frankly this leaves Fagan in a little bit of a tight spot given he champions cutting out earmarks.

Lobbyists, Mayors (Begich was good at trying to spend the state's money and taxpayer money), etc, get paid to lobby and given the political hypocrisy among the Dems in Alaska, Palin would be damned if she did and damned if she didn't.

The fact that you put in that it's Palin's job to put in pork tells me one thing. You are a Democrat. And one who likes to spend other peoples money.

Moreover, the more pork you put in, the more you risk leaving important projects left on the table.

Begich was hired to do a job, not lay blame on Palin. What is Murkowski's take on this.

...understand completely that Alaska cannot EVER survive without some earmarks.  Fifteen years in government has shown me how dependent we are on earmarks for most of our important infrastructure.  Without earmarks the extreme erosion of our shores would make ALL Alaska harbors and ports impassable.  Without earmarks, those villages who now have running water and sewer systems would never have gotten them.  Without earmarks, most of our roads would be unusable.  Without earmarks we wouldn't have most of our base housing and facilities and most of the contractors who get their bread and butter from government contracts would be on the streets or driving down the Alcan.

Your aversion (and yes, sometimes Dan Fagan's aversion) to everything called an "earmark" simply shows me that you don't understand them or how they work.  You also don't understand the difference between an earmark that can IMPROVE Alaska's economy and one that is simply pork.  I won't say that makes you a Republican...I'll say it just makes you a dull-headed Republican.

Senator Murkowski understands completely the difference and most of her past "earmarks" have been integral to Alaska's needs.

And what you seem to miss is what I feel is the ultimate sin here...Sarah Palin is only against those earmarks that won't get her elected in 2012.

By the way, let's ask our dear Governor if she'll be bending over backwards to get earmarks for the Denali pipeline when they are the only game in town.  Their success won't do a whole lot for her 2012 aspirations...unless she's able to spin it her way.  I suspect there are a big group of folks who won't allow that to happen...Dan Fagan being one.

Linda

...understand completely that Alaska cannot EVER survive without some earmarks.

One of the more bogus assertions of all times, Madam.  We can survive quite well and make a boatload of money should we be able to log our own timber (Tongass logging shutdown); build our own roads (Roadless Forests); mine our own minerals (Pebble, Kensington, Red Dog, etc.); mine our own coal (Beluga, Chickaloon); drill for our own oil and natural gas (Chukchi Sea, Beaufort Sea, ANWR); build our own natural gas pipeline; manage our own wild game (Rural preference for subsistence); or catch our own fish (Halibut restrictions).

Sadly, there are those on the left and among the environmental community that are busily listing every single Alaskan animal as endangered in order to shut down all resource development, all road construction, port expansion, and anything else they can come up with.  Get the feds, the greens and the courts out of our way and we will do quite nicely in the decades to come.  But you aren't real interested in that are you?

...to handle that development.  Government money is what has ALWAYS built those public facilities.

Plus, you say we can make "plenty of money" by mining Tongass.  Yet, we ship wood chips to Japan and buy back the pressboard they make...at a profit to them.  You don't make "big money" off of the resources, you make the money off of the items you make WITH those resources and we've sent those jobs and factories out of the country.

And please...how many of those offshore leases have been in the hands of the oil companies for years, who haven't bothered to develop them?

Your simplistic analysis is laughable.  I support responsible environmental stewardships and have spoken out against PETA and Greenpeace when they've tried to support false roadblocks to development.  I worked for the organization for 13 years that supports the ports and harbors in Alaska...I'm well-aware that they need upgrading and/or expanding, as well as Alaska villages needing solutions to their eroding shorelines.  I completely agree that Alaska's roads need serious upgrades and construction.

And ALL OF THAT is done with government money because they are publicly-owned facilities.

So what were you trying to say, exactly?

to Begich. It's his job to know what federal monies is needed. And it's his job to ask. I am sure all of the lobbyists will be knocking on his door telling him what is needed.

Palin's job is to ensure the gas pipeline gets built. That is priority one and it should be both Senator's priorities when it comes to money.

The money asked by Palin for infrastucture will benefit either gas pipeline plan. And you might want to recant your comment on earmarks since it is you that seems to forget.

Sarah Palin: Earmark Queen Of The Earmark State

In other words when Palin asks for earmarks she is bad, then when she doesn't ask for earmarks she is bad. Sort of like your feelings about her. You will always try to find something wrong.

Your boy in Washington is now playing with the big boyz and he doesn't have a local news media covering for his butt anymore.

Politco.com has shown that. Begich is going to learn real fast the lesson on the local media covering for him is long gone.

...as I've never jumped on the "all earmarks are bad" bandwagon...because I know better.

Regarding your other medial sources, ignorance of the nature of earmarks and the importance to Alaska's infrastructure and economy is not limited to Republicans.

My problem with Governor Palin has been her self-serving,  hypocritical and dishonest approach to earmarks, to which your schoolboy crush blinds you.

A perfect example is here:  http://divasblueoasis.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=12 -- Governor Tony Knowles  and former Mayor of Ketchikan Bob Weinstein are well known as pro-business Democrats.  You will especially appreciate the candid and complete story of the Gravina Island Bridge told from the perspective of someone who was thrown under the bus by Sarah:

"Mayor Weinstein also pointed out that despite Palins claim of fighting "earmarks" she actually loves them. Sarah Palin aggressively pursued earmarks while she was Mayor of Wasilla.  She used the same lobbyists Ketchikan hired to push the Bridge project. As Governor, Palin has requested 750 million in Federal earmarks.

Tony Knowles also pointed out one more interesting bit of information, that the second "Bridge to Nowhere" was the Knik Arm Bridge which would cross from Anchorage to Point MacKenzie...benefitting the Governor's precious Wasilla. That project is far from "dead" and is moving forward." (This was true at this writing September 10th.)

As Governor Knowles quipped..."she said "thanks" without the "no thanks"".

And Senator Begich is about two years younger than me, I think (I'm 46) so he ceased being a "boy" a long time ago.  Many might say he ceased being a boy when his father died and he started his own (successful) business at 16.  "Your girl" Sarah has been proving repeatedly that she never did grow up nor has she ever had a successful business.

I recommend you it http://www.superiorpapers.com

Dems Redefining Earmarks to Fulfill Obama's Pledge

"...Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama have now both promised that the upcoming economic stimulus bill won't include any earmarks. Both have used Clintonian language to limit the scope of their promises, but that hasn't gotten all that much attention.'

You might want to update a pending recant on your highly accurate blog so that you get it right on earmarks, and what Obama is now saying.....

...they are choosing not to use that process to give out the money for the stimulus package.  It changes NOTHING about the projects themselves.

Read my follow up.

It seems your hatred for her has become an obsession? You fear her, therefore you feel you need to belittle her. tomlamb, you are correct sir. celticdiva, your stance on earmarks seems to match that of your "climate change" theory. No matter what happens, it is your advantage. Weather goes up, global warming, weather goes down, ohohohoh we meant climate change. Sarah accepts earmarks- she's the devil, she turns them down, she is purposefully damaging Alaska's economy. Honestly, where do you stand?

a fun fact about your boy Begich, he holds somewhat of a record. He is the first US Senator to serve without a college degree, congratulations. Now link us to your personal blog as a credible source please.......

You are wrong Jason, Begich is the only active US senator without a degree but there have been several senators without degrees in the history of the United States.
One that stands out on top of my list is Al Gore 1985 -1993. & he had a very successful political career.

I think you better check your fact checker.

http://www.infoplease.com/biography/var/algore.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Gore#cite_note-CNNbio-21

Gore graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in government cum laude on June 12, 1969.[22] The Washington Post described his commencement ceremony as a "Sixties period piece" of tradition and chaos. This included the moment when "President Nathan Pusey delivered his time-honored welcoming of the graduates to 'the company of educated men,' [and] hundreds of seniors rose from their folding chairs, raised their fists in defiance, and walked out."[23]

He went on to do graduate work but got F's. Hope it wasn't in climatology....

you are right, there are others in history, and i made a mistake, but two things

Al Gore is not that great

You were wrong in trying to bust me up, kind of funny
