Andrew Halcro a rarity in politics
By Mike Dingman
Alaska Standard Contributor
Rarely in a lifetime do we see dynamic and truly brilliant men make the sacrifice to move into public service. Andrew Halcro is one of those men. When he would stand up on the floor of the Alaska State House of Representatives, everybody would listen, because while nobody knew exactly what he was going to say, we all knew it was going to be brilliant.
A life-long Alaskan, Halcro has been business minded since the time he could walk. He worked his way up through his family’s business and earned the position of President and CEO that he currently holds. He is a business minded Republican that thinks outside of the box, which irritates many of the old guard in the Alaskan Republican Party.
Andrew has a way of reaching across the aisle and appealing to people from many different ideologies. It is impossible to tag his ideology with a label because it is born of well educated and researched critical thought rather than a blindly followed, blanketed ideology. The style in which he leads shows that he believes in the intelligence of people. He is type of man that, regardless of his status, will sit down to lunch with you and explain why he feels the way he feels. He is the same person whether he is dressed to the nines speaking directly to the heart of Alaskans or sitting in jeans on his deck drinking a beer.
Andrew has, by some, been described as a smug, silver-spoon fed “effete young chap” not grounded in the reality that you and I live out every day. This characterization could not be further from the truth. He is a champion for the little guy. During his term as a State House Representative he alienated himself from the Republican Party by speaking out against the closed caucus attitude they held. He believes that government should be open and honest. He is right.
The dedication that Halcro has for his state can be seen on the blog he maintains on his website www.andrewhalcro.com . He spends his free time engaging Alaskans on the important issues of the day. Even in his private life his passion lies in fostering discussion and debate in the public policy arena.
On Tuesday the Anchorage Daily News political blog reported that Andrew Halcro may be rethinking his run for The United State House of Representatives against incumbent Congressman Don Young. Halcro cites personal and corporate responsibilities and opportunities as potential reasons for not running.
Alaska needs leaders like Andrew Halcro. We need to keep men like him involved in the process of creating public policy. We need a man like Andrew Halcro to be our representative in Congress. He is a statesman in every sense of the world and would surely be as accessible in the US House as he was in the State House. He would bring a sense of fiscal responsibility with him that is sorely missing right now in Washington DC.
Whatever his reasons and whatever his decision Andrew Halcro will be an essential voice in local politics for a long time to come. I am confident that he will continue to be found at political fundraisers, events and on a regular basis on his website. However, the selfish part of me clings to the hope that Halcro will run for Congress. The tide has turned and it is time for Congressman Young to go. Halcro is young, enthusiastic, brilliant and the perfect candidate for the job.
There is nobody I would rather have represent me in the House of Representatives than Andrew Halcro. Having such a man as our lone Congressman would not only strengthen the state, but also have a tremendous impact on our public image. Andrew, I know you will make the decision that is best for you and your family, however, this Alaskan truly hopes you will run and represent Alaska with the dedication and proficiency which you have demonstrated that only you can do.
wrong place, sorry
My husband knows he doesn't have to worry about me screwing around on him. Please don't project your issues/problems onto me.
Matter fact, my husband respects and appreciates Andrew Halcro as much as I do for his intellectual prowess and honesty. It's a standard you should try and aspire to.
Regarding your ethically challenged girl Palin; Todd's emails released to Crivella West confirm everything I suspected about her... and then some.
I was wondering if it would be you or Burke to take Stapleton's place as her spokesboy! Good luck with that!
P.S. I think you should tell us what YOU have ever done for Alaska!
Like you would believe anything I tell you...I don't need to quantify anything with you. I've never screwed around on my wife nor ever entertained the idea. For you to insinuate that is simply disgusting. Maybe you should aspire to honesty, intergrity, etc. I have high enough standards, thank you. You really don't know much about me at all. What have I ever done for Alaska? More than you can imagine. Again, you know absolutely nothing about me. While you're at it, how about YOU? Specific examples please. I think you should tell us.
CASA (court appointed special advocate) I was the voice in court for abused and neglected children.
I employed hundreds of young people in my business, including adults transitioning back to society.
Raised 110 thousand bucks for the Red Cross for 51 families displaced by fire.
Raised hundreds of thousands and countless toys for Toys for Tots.
Fed countless kids staying at Covenant House.
Volunteered at Beans Cafe.
Raised 13 thousand for Mother Lawrence to continue her ministry.
I'm done for now. Truthfully, I don't wear these things on my sleeve so that I can "prove" anything to anyone, or look for a pat on the back. I'm doing it for you because you're a pest.
God Bless
Resume? Not necessary. I know what you do for a living. People tell me about the "Christian" behavior displayed on your morning show. Is that what you wanna be doin' when Jesus comes back, Mark?
But don't worry, I don't believe ALL the rumors I hear. Besides, it's not about what I believe; it's about what your wife believes.
If you don't feel you need to "quantify anything" with me, then why did ya?
Sticks and stones, Mark. I was just responding to your statement about Andrew Halcro at the bottom of this page. Speaking of which, you have yet to quantify your problem with Andrew Halcro. What is it? Do you not like his ideology? Did he do something to you personally? Are ya sure you're not just jealous?
Proverbs 27:4 - Anger is cruel and destructive, but it is nothing compared to jealousy.
"people" tell you? Funny. People tell me things too Val. I just disagree with the man's politics, thats where it ends. I leave the gossip to others. You seem to revel in it so thats cool. I'll be judged like all of us when Jesus returns. Get your own house in order. Your right about one thing, what you believe is irrelevant.
What church do you attend? You seem to enjoy bible quotes.
Heres one for ya: Provebs 21:19 Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered wife.
God Bless
what "politics" of Halcro's do you disagree with? Can you think of something? Anything?
My personal life is irrelevant here and completely off topic.
Quit messing around and wasting time.... tell us what your issue is with Halcro, or I'll continue to assume I was right from the beginning; you're just envious/jealous of his intellect and success.
Thanks in advance.
cool

I enjoyed Andrew Halcro reading from page 127 of Sarah's book regarding the kicking of oil companies.

Also interesting was Andrew's reading of page 276 of Sarah's book. This dealt with the Katie Couric interview when Sarah was running for vice president.

And if he does, I'll do whatever I can to help him get elected.

Good grief.
Did you get an autograph?
A lock of his hair?
OMG DID U TOUCH HIM???

P.S.: What the heck was Mike Dingman doing on the floor of the legislature?
If what you're saying here was remotely true, the guy would've garnered more than 9% in a wide open state-wide gubernatorial election.
He has no chance - Don Young will beat him like a rented mule. People just don't like being lectured to by a guy who thinks he's smarter than everyone else.
This "champion for the little guy" has done nothing but apologize for BP for the past 4 years. Alaskans see right through that horse crap, and they proved it at the polls.
His radio show floundered because he's like a condescending broken record. The ratings sucked and he was shown the door. He's not particularly smart, he's just willing to chime in. Bars around town are full of "policy experts" like this chap.
A resounding whipping by Don will make this child of privelege irrelevant once and for all. The prospect of having that happen has frightened him to the point of now hedging on his commitment to run. What a complete tool.
Andy wrote "People just don't like being lectured to by a guy who thinks he's smarter than everyone else." Of course, but what if he is actually smarter than everyone else? Perhaps it would be a good idea to listen. I have found him to be a thorough and thoughful thinker. We need more like him.
EOM
And what exactly has the congressman done for Alaska lately? I think the problem with this situation is that Alaskans are very proud and very hard headed. They fear change and the fact that Congressman Young is really a stuffed shirt who is way past his prime. Bravo Mr Dingman
And what has Halcro done for Alaska EVER????
As a successful small business owner he has offered employment opportunities for many Alaskans. I also recall Andrew serving in the state legislature where he was referred to as a true "maverick" where he publicly criticized other Republican legislators for taking too many junkets at taxpayer expense. And don't forget, he exposed the quitters abuse of power!
Maybe you're just jealous, Mark. Andrew is smarter, better looking and more successful than you'll ever be.
It is what it is!
