Why Sarah Palin failed

At one point and time Sarah Palin charmed just about each and every one of us during her political career. I fell for the Palin mystique early on and was one of her biggest fans. But once I began to analyze where she stood on issues I realized she wasn’t who I had hoped she was policy wise. She also turned out to be someone other than the person I thought she was. But isn’t that true for most people. Don’t most folks we think too highly of at first end up disappointing? I am sure I’ve disappointed thousands.

Sarah Palin is one of those people who give a great first impression. How else do you explain millions of Americans falling in love with her overnight? When you first meet her and even after you’ve spent considerable time with her, you are impressed. She comes across as real, attractive, smart, level headed, void of ego. She seems like she’s in it for the right reasons. She says all the right things, and leaves you with a sense this woman is sincere and wants to do what’s right.

I suspect for most of Palin’s life she was popular. Sure there were probably a few of the jealous types who didn’t like her because she was pretty. But by and large I would imagine in the realm of popularity, Sarah Palin has lived a charmed life.

But that lifelong popularity could have led to her downfall as governor. As times got rough for Palin, she seemed surprised if not stunned that so many would criticize her.

Things certainly went well for Palin initially in her political career. Even liberals and media élites fell for her once they learned she was all too quick to criticize Republicans. Then when she was elected governor and started raising taxes through the roof, exploded the size of government, gave away more than $800,000,000 in free cash and launched an all out war on the oil industry, liberals were smitten.

Conservatives loved her too but for different reasons. She was pro-life and lived it by giving birth to a special needs child. Her policies didn’t matter. She was a person of faith and cherished life. For most social conservatives in Alaska, she could do no wrong.

Just about the entire state was enamored by Palin early on in her time as governor. She must have thought to herself, being governor really isn’t that hard.

The only group not so happy with Palin early on was the business community. Business leaders and entrepreneurs tend to have more invested in the state than most of us and they typically examine policy more than personality when evaluating a politician. But business leaders , oil industry folks and some Republicans in the legislature were afraid to speak out against a popular governor’s liberal, anti-business policies for fear of retaliation.

Palin had the entire state either under her spell or fearing her with few exceptions. Those who opposed her were marginalized as “haters”. Palin critics became the political fringe in Alaska. I should know, I was there.

But Sarah Palin was doomed to fail for one simple reason. She convinced herself she could sustain her unprecedented approval ratings. And when critics arose she took their attacks personally. She couldn’t rise above the fray. Anyone with any type of maturity, wisdom, and insight knows leadership requires taking stands and those stands will divide and polarize. It comes with the territory and Palin should have known it.

Because everything was so personal with Palin, she had a special way of angering her opponents. Palin left those who found themselves locked in a battle with her, somehow ending up hating her. It’s doubtful we’ll ever have another governor who enraged more people than Sarah Heath Palin. It was almost as though beating you wasn’t enough, she had to humiliate you too. She played to win and made a lot of enemies along the way.

Things began to turn for the worse for Palin when she was picked as John McCain’s VP nominee. Her new job required she become something she had never been before. Partisan and conservative.

How did she think liberals in the state and the Alaska media would react when she transformed herself into a conservative overnight? Did Palin think Matt Zency, editorial writer for the Anchorage Daily News would like it when she accused Obama of palling around with terrorists? Didn’t she realize her biggest political ally, ultra left-winger State Rep. Les Gara who loved her when she was raising taxes would turn on her once she called Obama a socialist? Palin must have convinced herself liberal Alaskans were fans because of her charm, good looks, or the fact she baked cookies. What she should have known is liberals in Alaska loved her because her policies were liberal. In fact they were the most liberal ever proposed by any Alaska governor. She made former Governor Tony Knowles look like Pat Buchanan.

Once she lost the state’s liberals and the favor of the media, those conservative politicians who feared her began to find the courage to take her on. All those cowardly Republican legislators who voted for AGIA and ACES knowing it was bad for the state out of fear of Palin turned on her in a moment and all of a sudden the Belle of Wasilla was a lame duck. Her ability to push through legislation gone.

Palin must have convinced herself early on the way to be a successful governor is to please all the people all the time. Or maybe she thought she could fool all the people all the time. She certainly showed a propensity to pull one over on you. Some of the bull she tried selling was so ridiculous it made you think she was either a sociopathic liar or a delusion nut job able to convince herself what was not true was. The more controversy she found herself in, the more critics attacked her, the more deceptive she became. The more delusional she appeared.

You say Dan that’s harsh. You make Palin out to be a bad person. I don’t believe that for a second. I believe Sarah Palin is just like the rest of us. A good person with a good heart who just got in a job she was grossly unprepared for. The more overwhelmed she got, the more desperate and delusional she became.

Before you are quick to judge her, remember times in your own life when things got rough. Did you always do the right thing and make the perfect choices? I know I haven’t. Yes it is true much of the trouble she experienced she brought on herself by trusting the likes of Frank Bailey and Meghan Stapleton. They encouraged her to play the victim card over and over. Leaders don’t play the victim card.

Bottom line, Sarah Palin is human. She is very much that hockey mom, PTA president we thought she was. Not the governor we all hoped she would be.

Great leaders have thick skin. They throw aside criticism and don’t take it personally. They reject the desire to be liked. Strong leaders are obsessed with policy solutions and will fight for the issues they hold dear. Ankle biters or “haters” are meaningless to them. For Palin, it was all about the “haters.”

Palin was so consumed with her critics she was void of any commitment to policy. The most glaring example comes with ACES. Palin told us her staff convinced her ACES must be a net profits tax instead of a gross profits tax. So Palin sent ACES to the legislature as a net profits tax, but anti-oil populist State Sen. Hollis French changed ACES into a gross profits tax and Palin signed it anyway saying it was a better bill as a result of the change.

Palin’s weak-kneed approach to policy revealed itself in a similar way with AGIA. Palin sent AGIA to the legislature with a ten-year lock in of fiscal terms. Once again left winger French yanked the crucial provision and Palin signed it anyway. These two examples show Palin’s lack of commitment to policy. ACES and AGIA were for all practical purposes engineered by liberal Democrat Hollis French and Palin didn’t care. She was all about being liked, maintaining popularity, being a star.

After her resignation Friday some are characterizing Palin as a flakey, egocentric, self-serving, demigod who has always been about nothing other than advancing her own political ambitions. Critics say she abandoned Alaskans for greener pastures. Bigger and better things.

Does this make Sarah Palin a fraud? Not in the least. She was thrust into a position most of us would have failed in. Being a leader is hard. You have to be grounded in what you believe and unwavering in it even if what you believe is unpopular. Like most of us, Sarah Palin did not have what it takes to lead. At least not at this point in her life. That’s why good leaders are so hard to find and why so many politicians fail to make a real difference.

If Palin is ever to become a successful leader she will have to shed her desire to be liked. She’ll have to learn how not to take criticism personally. She’ll have to come to understand that there will always be harsh critics for a pro-life, born again Christian woman who stands for family values.

Sarah Palin still has a bright future ahead. Her life as a mother and wife inspires Americans and she will do a lot of good before it’s all said and done. But for now she should stay home for a while, spend time with her family, gain wisdom, and find healing. Yes, it is true, quitting with a year and a half left on her only term as governor is a bump on the road, but it is far from the end of the political career of the most charismatic politician since Ronald Reagan.

...and Dan has been in the front of the crowd chucking rocks ever since Sarah dissed him and wouldn't call into his radio show any more.

is a victim piece.   What a load of crap.  Everyone has personal, family pressures to deal with.  Lots of Moms have sons or daughters in harms way around the globe.  Lots of Moms have daughters going through a rough period.  You know what, those Moms don't usually quit their jobs.  Whatever reason and excuses anyone wants to make for her, she simply quit because she couldn't take the pressure.  Very understandable, many people, even most, would not be able to stand up to that kind of pressure in public.   So she should stay out of the public spotlight if she can't handle it.  No shame in that.  Just be honest and quit playing the perpetual victim looking for sympathy all the time.

To be his new BEST friend!
ENJOY!

She told them (Randy & Friends) if you dont stop the back room deals she would go PUBLIC.
And she did.
PS. And when she ran for Governor, Rick Rydell said He did not like that she would not take his (expert) advice so he was going to (wash his hands (like Christ did) of her) and VOTE for Tony Knowles.

With a few minor exceptions you covered the subject of Sarah very well !
ALASKA comes first, we will do better without  her--too little of value for our future economy and growth as a state was accomplished and too many people  and families were brutalized at her thoughtless hand!
I wish her well----in what ever she chooses to do: but sadly she is NOT truly Conservative nor a Republican 'inside'. That cannot be "invented nor pretended".
Too much was just about her, and many untruths have been spread across this land about ALASKA = #1 !!

I have no facts to support that guess, and I have no idea if she has any acting talent or any interest in acting.
But she is very good looking and she's famous, and a lot of people would pay to see her in a movie. I would pay to see her in a movie. I would certainly tune into a TV movie.
I think such a movie will have a good message - such as pro country and/or pro family togetherness.
Of course it may be a documentary type movie rather than an acted out type of movie.
I think her decision to step down is completely fine, reasonable and acceptable. She is leaving the governorship in very capable hands with Sean Parnell.

Another big factor is the proposed Alaska gas pipeline. I think she very much wants Alaska to have a gasline (as most of us do). She would not be pleased to end her 4 year term without some kind of concrete commitments for a gasline.
I suspect that she may possibly suspect that her AGIA route might perhaps be too extreme of a bargaining position to get a gasline. If the North Slope oil companies are to take on the risk of this massive multi billion dollar project, then the deal has to be half way good for them, as well as good for the state. It is only reasonable that the producers have some long term gas tax predictability.
Sarah may feel that "passing the ball" to a teammate (as she described it) may result in scoring the basket that Alaska desperately needs - a gasline.
The person who is passing the basketball, may have made a good contribution in advancing the ball, but another teammate may have a better angle or "look" at the basket. And different players may be better in different areas - long range 3 point shot, slam dunks, defense, rebounding, etc.
I think Governor Palin made her decision with Alaska's best interest at heart.
Randy S. Griffin, Fairbanks, Alaska

She wasn't "trust into" the position of governor. She ran for it. Big difference.

I can't wait until tomorrow when you write this same article again.

Gotta gin up that talkin' machine somehow!

Palin is the victim AGAIN.

You are so full of BS!! Rumors!

I believe  SuesAiden has it right.  Dan IS full of some major BS.

Dan, Why would she abruptly leave the platform of Gov? There has to be a reason.
More RUMORS going around.
The story goes that Palin was found guilty of one of those so called frivolous charges that Palin has violated the Alaska Executive Ethics Act, possible misconduct having to do with her 'Legal Defense Fund'
(WHY DOES SOMEONE ETHICAL NEED A LEGAL DEFENSE FUND?) well, millons of dollars are said to be unaccounted for.
RUMORED unlawful use of funds, embezzlement- Sarah Pac sponsored?... Just askin
This is very plausible and if at all true a full investigation, a legislative inquiry of the Personnel Board should be made.....It was mentioned that Sarah was given an ultimatum [a choice] by the appointed 3 member personnel board, telling her that if she continues to be the Govenor the TRUTH of her guilt would have to come out and the whole mess and paper trail associated with it would have to be released to the public.
However, it's RUMORED if she RESIGNS [which is what she chose to do] she was told by the investigator and appointed 3 member board that determines ALL ETHICAL matters in the State of Alaska that she can essentially TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN FROM ACCOUNTABILITY AND CONSEQUENCE!!!!!!!!!!

Just a RUMOR

Keep dreaming and hoping and wishing Palin is in trouble. She just had enough and called it quits. Hoping won't make it so Syrin.

Yep, I've been hoping and praying for a while now, that you and my fellow Alaskans would finally see what I already knew....
Just trying to hold elected officials accountable!

Sarah and Meg are having a campfire meeting after Meg let it slip yesterday that the legal fund was for Palin's personal use; good grief Meg.

huh... news to me.
anybody specific?

...Palin (or someone in her inner circle) is the master of manufactured controversy/outrage.  When she or her minions publicly attack and play the faux victim card, they know that the swarms of Palin zombies will pounce upon the assigned target in an attempt to intimidate/threaten the critic into silence. I have more than 600 hate mails to prove it.  It's amazing the nasty attacks (including racist ones against me and my daughter) come out of those "Christian" mouths.

...have you?

Yes, you.

Yes, you.

...when the accuser doesn't have anything worthwhile to say.

You won't be able to continue bashing Palin without consequences. That's all I have to say to you, besides the fact that you are evil.

but isn't there a lot more pressing state issues?  energy [gas line, supplying much of the railbelt after cook inlet wells dry up]; climate change [coastal erosion, flooding, loss of permafrost and water supplies, effects on fish runs]; fiscal strategies as oil declines; crime and social problems; and so forth.
there's a lot more to life than whether sarah palin is feeling persecuted or not.  especially now that she's going back to being a private citizen.
i'm no lawyer, but i wonder if there's much precedent for a politician suing a blogger?  wouldn't the politician have to prove actual malice, beyond a shadow of a doubt?  i just don't think palin is going to win that one.  it's just bombast, idle threats.  sniping.  we've got bigger fish to fry.

Does this make Sarah Palin a fraud? YOU BETCHA!
You admitted she was something other than what she proclaimed to be. That's a FRAUD.
Palin critics became the political fringe in Alaska. I should know, I was there. Dan, you helped make those Alaskans the fringe....

If she just went straight she might go far;
She is strong and brave and true;
But she's always tired of the things that are,
And she wants the strange and new.
She says: "Could I find my proper groove,
What a deep mark I would make!"
So she chops and changes, and each fresh move
Is only a fresh mistake.

And she forgets, as she strips and runs
With a brilliant, fitful pace,
It's the steady, quiet, plodding ones
Who win in the lifelong race.
And she forgets that her youth has fled,
Forgets that her prime is past,
Till she stands one day, with a hope that's dead,
In the glare of the truth at last.

She has failed, she has failed; she has missed his chance;
She has just done things by half.
Life's been a jolly good joke on her,
And now is the time to laugh.
Ha, ha! She is one of the Legion Lost;
She was never meant to win;
She's a rolling stone, and it's bred in the bone;
She's a woman who won't fit in.

Raised your hand if you ever voted for someone because you "liked" them?
I have my hand up by the way....I voted for Palin....
Our broadcast yourselves Youtube, American Idol, get popular overnight generation loves people who are in the spotlight despite their political and moral standards. This "worship" as I  like to call it will inevitably turned to hate.....
We have to stop electing people based on their popularity, based on their likeability. Sure Reagan was great but let's play it safe and really try to understand what these politicians know and believe before getting them in office. We need to figure out what is going to be best for our country, neighborhood, family, and personal lives.
Then see if this politician agrees with those things and will seek to provide what is best and what is right. This of course might go against our selfish needs....
Sarah Palin set her own fire but did we fuel it?
I personally will never again vote base on likeability.

It is our fault.  Not because she was elected, because we allow a system that favors good looks and 10 second sound bites.  Until and unless we drastically overhaul our campaign finance and election laws we will always be stuck with mostly idiots, ideologues, and milquetoast for our choices of candidates.

Dan, this article is so sophomoric. Do you honestly think she should not take insults about her daughters & her Down Syndrome son personally? Do you have children & if so, how would you have handled this?
If the citizens of Alaksa felt she did her job as governor so poorly, why is it that 60% of them voted for the McCain/Palin ticket & only 38% voted for the Obama ticket?
"You Betcha" Sarah has a bright future ahead of her. Sit back & watch. You will need a little milk to help swallow your words.

Insults and jokes are part of the package when you live in the public spot light. It doesn't matter if you're a politician, a talk show host, a professional athlete, everything you do, think and say is fair game for criticism and satire.  As the saying goes, "If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen".  That's exactly what she has done.  She has packed her toys and she's going home because some people were mean.  If she couldn't handle the job where she still enjoyed more than a 50% approval rating, there is no way she could handle the job on a national scale even if there were enough idiots to elect her (which I don't think there are).

Alaska and her family are better off with her out of office.  The country will be better off too if she stays out of politics.  She can bank some coin on the speaker circuit, promote her books, do fund raising for other do nothing, know nothing candidates.  So she will get the attention she craves, from people she will always appeal to, rednecks, bigots, racists, religious zealots and her other assorted idiotic groupies that make up her cult following.

Yeah, her future is bright even though she isn't.  She'll make a perfect addition to the Faux News propaganda machine with her BFF Greta.

 An excellent analysis.

She wants him sooooooo bad!

It is very difficult to fly like an eagle, when you are pursued by a bunch of buzzards!

You know, after putting all the chaotic pieces together I think you nailed it. She wanted to be liked. Makes sense, she makes a great hostess but that profile doesn't transform into governorship. By the way, this quote put a smile on my monday morning face.

........."Don’t most folks we think too highly of at first end up disappointing? I am sure I’ve disappointed thousands."
